Other details: The armorial on this tile represents `Tankarville' Hereditary Grand Chamberlain of Normandy and who from that dignity often took the name of Chamberlain only. This family were benefactors to the Abbey (Henniker). The reading is - Gules an inescutcheon argent within an Orle of Mallets or. In Willement's Heraldic Notices of Canterbury Cathedral Chamberlayne is rendered Gules an inescutcheon inter 6 mullets pierced or. Dr Chamberlayne tempo Jas 2. bore. Gules an inescutcheon between eight cinque foils argent (Burke's Gen Armoury). Another ancient family of Chamberlayne bore. Gules or chevron between three escallops or (Glovers Charles's and Nicholas rolls. The Tankavilles are represented by the families of Chamberlayne in Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, York and Warwickshire all of which take the arms as here delineated. The present Earls of Tankaville, Bernets by name are only remotely connected with the ancient Earldom.
